Every wonder why other med students seem to “get it”?
Ever wonder why you work harder but your grades do not change?
What about how the people in the bottom half of the class still match into the best residency spots?
How about something as straightforward as how to get into medical school?
I think we can all agree that effective med school help is really hard to find.
I am talking about the REAL things you need to know.
-not “study harder for the MCAT”
-not “learn to drink from the fire hose”
-not “just be yourself”
I’m Dr. Smoat. A real doctor. The name is to protect my identity, but my story is 100% true. Want to know why I need to remain anonymous? Contact me by replying to the e-mail I send you when you subscribe to The Art of Medical School and get the med school help you need.
I once struggled with figuring out how to get into medical school. My undergrad GPA was average. My MCAT was considered a “minimum score”. My extracurricular activities were standard – nothing special.
The first time I applied to med school I was excited when I came home to a mailbox full of letters.
Too bad they were all “Dear John” letters. All rejections…except for one interview.
I could have given up there.
Maybe most people would have done that. I didn’t. What I did next was something that changed my life forever and helped me ultimately become one of the most successful medical school students in my class.
What did I do?
Did I study harder and re-take the MCAT? NO
Did I call med school admissions committees and beg to get in? HECK NO
Did I go back and pad my GPA with garbage classes? DOUBLE HECK NO
What I did was systematically study every resource I could about getting in to medical school. In the process I found out some important things about the med school process:
1. There are very few decent (let alone good) resources that actually tell you how to get into medical school. Most people will tell you the same thing over and over again. Platitudes that got me nothing.
2. There are a ton of factors that determine your success in the medical school application process but by focusing on a specific few tactics and areas of my application I could increase my chances of acceptance exponentially.
3. There is a select group of students who seem incredibly unqualified for medical school yet somehow get into extremely competitive schools.
4. There is no such thing as the “best medical school”. The only thing that can determine the best med school is you.
So I re-grouped and re-applied the next year. I had multiple interviews and acceptances and ultimately landed my first choice of medical schools. It was a feeling I will never forget.
But that isn’t the end of my story!
Then came the second big struggle. The thing no one told me was that med school is unbelievably different from undergrad. I struggled to find my groove. I spun my wheels for 2 years. What did I have to show by the time I was half way through the four years of medical school?
I was in the bottom 25% of my med school class
My step 1 board score was terrible, barely passing
I was on the road to not match into a residency. It was a sickening feeling.
But I remembered that I had this same struggle when I tried to figure out medical school.
So I systematically learned what and how to do the things that would land me into my dream residency.
The problem was there were no resources for that either!
I didn’t have any trusted source to tell me so I had to learn on my own. I applied for and landed a position in one of the most competitive specialties. I also vowed to make it easy for people like us to find the information they need to get into medical school and land their first choice in residency.
Which is why I am here.
For you.
